Nothing like a big colourful helmet to brighten your day!!

I always prefer to start with a new helmet so I can ensure it is free from defects before painting.    You can paint any lid, but the manufacturers will tell you otherwise.     I always protect the inner padding by removing it before painting or thoroughly masking before starting.

However, the wearer must accept all liability arising from any work being carried out on their helmet, as of course I cannot guarantee it's stiffness in the event of a crash following painting.
